National Golf Championships for Thurles
The All-Ireland Cups and Shields Finals will be held at Thurles Golf Club from 4th October to 7th October 2018 for the first time in its history. This is a unique achievement for the Club and it will bring much interest and business to the Club and surrounding Thurles area for the week.
The five competitions are as follows:
-
- AIG Senior Cup
- AIG Junior Cup
- AIG Barton Shield
- AIG Jimmy Bruen
- AIG Pierce Purcell
Teams have been qualifying around the 32 counties since April of this year and all four provinces have now run off their Area Finals so we will see teams from Dundalk, Kinsale, Royal Portrush, Athlone, Newbridge and Ballyclare to name but a few. Local interest in the Finals will be provided by Nenagh who will contest in the Pierce Purcell and Clonmel in the Junior Cup. The format is Matchplay on a knockout basis.
Thurles Golf Club, established in 1909, is a well renowned parkland course on 135 acres approx. It currently has 600 members approx., male and female, and a special programme is in place to encourage beginners through “Get into Golf” and also for juniors and juveniles. It has a resident PGA Golf Professional, Raymond Ryan and its facilities also include bar and restaurant, squash courts and snooker room. The total yardage of the course is 6,661 yards off the championship markers. The signature hole is the 3rd Hole – a par 3 over water and surrounded by bunkers.
We expect huge interest from visiting teams especially the Tipperary based ones and additional parking has been procured to cater for the expected numbers who will travel to Thurles in support of their teams. A traffic plan has been put in place to ensure ease of access around the Club facilities.
