Well serviced by the Irish Rail network and growing its reputation as a college town, Thurles has many cultural and recreational facilities, from the Source Arts Centre and Theatre to a well-equipped leisure centre, multiscreen cinema complex, a modern shopping centre, and the renowned Semple Stadium, the spiritual home of hurling, situated a stone’s throw from the TUS Thurles Campus.
A student centred and friendly campus environment, TUS Thurles incorporates a 200 seater conference centre, lecture theatres, computer suites, science laboratories and specialist games development labs. Thurles campus also boasts the cutting-edge TUS SportsLab, a world standard sports strength and conditioning facility. Among the facilities available in the 2,000 sq. metre facility are a 45m six land spring track specifically designed to improve speed, a Paralympic area, cable machines, a range of sport technology systems, including micro electro mechanical systems and GPS systems; Olympic lifting platforms: functional screening kits; weights and the full range of exercise machines. The superb facility is designed to support students enrolled on our sports programmes, as well as college teams. TUS’s sports programme lecturing team organise regular Sports Development Workshops for school groups, covering topics such as speed testing, fundamental movement and sport psychology. The SportsLab is also used by professional athletes, GAA county underage development squads and elite inter-county GAA teams.
Further sport developments are planned, including a new, indoor clay court tennis facility and additional GAA facilities.
